Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is there seating or do we sit on the ground?

The Outdoor Forest Theater has long wooden benches with backs for seating. The benches can get hard after a while, so I always recommend bringing a stadium seat or a blanket to sit on.

2) Are the seats assigned?

All Seats are first come, first served. We do not reserve seats, and all unattended items saving seats will be collected and kept at the box office.

3) May we bring a picnic?

Definitely! Create your own culinary experience for your family. We encourage you to do so. You are also welcome to bring wine and beer. If you happen to forget something, we have a terrific Concession stand with hot dogs, chili, nachos, desserts, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and sodas.

4) We are visiting. Is there a place where we oan buy a nice picnic to bring?

Carmel is famous for its restaurants! We couldnt possibly begin to list all of them and, most will certainly help pack a picnic for you. However, a oouple of restaurants go out of their way to support the Forest Theater Guild, and so we would like to recommend them to you:

Bruno's Market has a terrific deli and a nice selection of wines. The Grill on Ocean Avenue will make a beautiful plate for you, and they are very familiar with the Forest Theater. Flaherty's and The Village Corner will also pack a lovely dinner to go for you, Piatti's has always been deliciously supportive and Christine at Chez Christine is delightful - you'll enjoy her delicious food and wonderful company.

Be creative, ask where you are staying - someone will have a recommendation for you, and let us know if you find a restaurant that we should add to our list.

5) What should we wear?

Summers in Carmel can be cool - wasn't it Mark Twain who said something along the lines that the "coldest winter he ever spent was a summer in San Francisco!" Well, it's true! Our summer fog rolls in and keeps us cool while the rest of the country heats up. Therefore, please bring your sweater and a jacket if you have one.  Hats and gloves are a good idea, too. And, a blanket to snuggle under always helps. We sell blankets at the theater if you don't have one.

We keep two bonfires going pretty strong on either side of the audience They, not only keep you warm, but they also add to the ambiance.

6) When can we arrive?

You are welcome to come early to enjoy the beautiful theater and our surroundings. The Box Office and Will Call open an hour and a half prior to the performance time. If you are here before we are, our friendly staff will let you know when the box office is open and they will collect your tickets.

7) What time do the movies begin?

Movies begin at dusk, about 8:30 p m. They are so much Fun! It's like a Drive-in without the cars. Everyone is festive, brings their picnic, and settles in for a fun evening.  Make this a family summer tradition! View our current line-up of Films in the Forest.
